Our Story

Two things. Two places
they come from.

Scent always makes up its mind before you do. Proust needed a whole novel to explain what a bite of madeleine could do to memory — how one taste could pull an entire childhood back into the room before the mind had time to catch up.

Bao is like that for us too.

01 — The Kitchen

The Home

In the households we grew up in, the steam rising from the bamboo baskets belonged to mothers and grandmothers, women who never called themselves chefs. They woke up before dawn, and their hands knew the dough: no measuring, no timing, just an instinct for when it had rested enough, when the filling was ready.

That knowledge was personal – never written down, never explained, only watched and absorbed, until one day your own hands knew it too.

02 — The Street

The Street

Sheng Jian Bao is a slightly different cousin. The smell arrives before the stall does. You don’t make this one at home. The resting is too much of a trouble and the frying is too much of a hustle – you go out and look for it.

The griddle hissing, steam lifting off the pan’s rim, sesame and spring onion dancing in the heat. A long queue is the only sign you need: this one’s worth the wait.

Between Two

One soft, one sharp.
One patient, one urgent.

Our childhood memories of bao were split the same way, kitchen on one side, street on the other. And so did we.

Raised between two languages, growing up between two sets of expectations: the rules handed down in the kitchen, the rhythm demanded by the world outside.

Adulting means growing into sophistication: you learn to wear a different self in every room, soft in one, crisp in the next, like a bao skin that changes with the heat.

Hands reaching for a steamer of bao

Underneath, it’s the same devotion:
something delicious and genuine, carried across an ocean,
wrapped up, and placed in your hands.
